The European larch is native to the European Alps and the Pyrenees. Larches are (unusually) deciduous conifers and tolerant to very cold (even -50C) temperatures. It sometimes planted as an intial species when attempting to restablish forest.This use has been discontinued in NZ because of its invasive nature into other areas. Can grow to about 40 m and has tough and durable wood.
