82 Matai Prumnopitys taxifolia

Family: Podocarpaceae

Matai is one of New Zealand's great podocarps.  Formerly known as black pine, it can live to a great age (maybe 1000 years).  This tree is in a juvenile form with slender and interlacing branches. After many years the tree becomes adult, forming a trunk up to 1.3 m in diameter with a distinctive 'hammer marked' appearance. The timber has been used extensively for flooring in NZ houses but like the rimu it can no longer be milled.
