77 Yew Taxus baccata

Family: Taxaceae

The English Yew. The very springy wood of this tree was used for the bows of Robin Hood. Yews can live for a long time. One in Scotland is thought to be over 2000 years old. The leaves are poisonous, even when dried. Often planted in churchyards in Europe. The yew is sometimes seen in gardens as a tall narrow tree. These yews ('Fastigiata' or Irish yew) are derived from a ‘sport’ or ‘freak’ of the normal yew. There is a large yew at the north end of the road through the arboretum.
