This is a species of “false cypress” and native to Central and Southern Japan. The wood is scented and the tree is grown for its timber in Japan, where it is used as a material for building palaces, temples, shrines and baths, and coffins. Several cultivars have been developed for ornamental garden trees. This one however is far from ornamental !
