43 English Elm Ulmus procera

Family: Ulmaceae

Also called the common elm or the field elm. A fast growing tree up to 45m high. The tough interlocked grain of the wood makes it almost impossible to split so it was used for purposes where we use metal today: wheel hubs, ships keels, waterpipes (when hollowed out). Dutch elm disease, a fungal disease carried by beetles has had a major effect on elms throughout Europe. Elm leaves are easily distinguished by their asymmetric shape.
