39 Canary Island date palm Phoenix canariensis

Family: Phoeniceae

This is sometimes called the Phoenix palm, however canariensis is but one variety of fourteen Phoenix palms. It is a relative of the date palm but its fruit does not have sufficient pulp to be worth eating. Often grown as solitary ornamentals but the tree can spread and Landcare Research NZ have called it a ‘sleeper weed’. Whanganui Protected Tree
