37 Tanekaha Phyllocladus trichomanoides

Family: Podocarpaceae

Tanekaha is a New Zealand podocarp (cf Rimu, Matai, Kahikatea etc), found mainly in the North Island and Nelson area  and sometimes called the 'celery pine'.  It grows up to about 20m. The leaves turn brown quite quickly, easily seen on this tree. The timber is strong and knot free. The bark is rich in tannin wand was used by Maori to make a red dye. This tree is not a good example as the branches usually fall off the trunk as the tree grows.
