36 Japanese umbrella pine Sciadopitys verticillata

Family: Sciadopityceae

A unique tree with no living relatives and known in the fossil record for 250 million years. Native in Japan, its name comes from the arrangement of the leaves (which are not really leaves at all but stems) which are like the ribs of an umbrella. Very slow growing trees which are prized as ornamental trees in gardens. This one is thought to be the biggest in NZ. Whanganui Protected tree T17
