29 Miro Aesculus hippocastanum
The Miro grows in lowland forest thought out New Zealand. It is very similar to the matai (Prumnopitys taxifolia) but has larger leaves and not white underneath like the matai. Both of these trees used to be classed in the genus Podocarpus and these two are members of the five great podocarps that distnguish the NZ bush (The others are Rimu, Totara and Kahikatea.) It has disitinctive orange/red berries which are a favourte food of the kereru.
