100 Black poplar Populus nigra

There are many of these poplars in the park beyond the small road bridge over the Matarawa stream. Easily recognised by their triangular shaped leaf, quite straight along the bottom. Trees are either male or female with the female trees shedding tiny seeds attached to cotton like tufts. The ‘cotton” is thick on the ground late December and January. The tree is sometimes called a ‘cottonwood”
