10. Hybrid Oak Quercus sect lobatae

This tree is a hybrid of North American red oaks which include pin oak (palustris), northern red oak (rubra), black oak (velutina). There are several hundred hybrids because these oaks do not distinguish each other at pollination. Red oak wood is used for timber but is unsuitable for exterior use. Used in barrel construction to give the “American oak” flavours in some whiskeys and wines.
